Head of Software Engineering

Cathedral Appointments are seeking a new Head of Software Engineering for our Exeter-based client. This is a pivotal role within a growing, dynamic company and the post holder will oversee and manage all software and application development, reporting directly to the Managing Director. The Software Engineering team includes frontend developers, backend developers and systems administrators, and you will be working on several critical projects with a view to continually improving standards and efficiency. Previous experience managing people is essential, as well as the ability to resolve technical challenges and implement cost-effective technology solutions for the business. 

Head of Software Engineering responsibilities include...

  • Ensure the smooth running of the Software Engineering department, maintaining an oversight of all projects and activity, ensuring that compatibility and integration issues are considered
  • Manage department staffing including resource planning, recruitment, appraisals and disciplinary action
  • Be accountable for the availability of client-facing platforms, ensuring adherence with SLAs
  • Determine the most appropriate design of infrastructure to support the department
  • Undertake compliance testing and risk analysis of business concern according to ISO 27001 framework
  • Maintain regular communication with the organisation’s department heads
  • Provide technical consultation to other departments
  • Occasional off-site travel and client visits

Head of Software Engineering requirements include...

  • Extensive experience in a similar management position
  • Certifications in Scrum Master, Prince 2 or ITIL Foundation
  • Proven experience in software development and project management
  • Working knowledge of software design methodologies such as RAD, LD, Agile, Scrum, Waterfall
  • Technical knowledge of PC Operating systems – Linux, MYSQL / MSSQL / MARIA DB, PHP, Apache/NGINX, CSS/SCSS, JAVA, JavaScript, Angular, XML, HTML
  • Relevant University Degree is desirable
  • Understanding of human resource management principles
  • Excellent understanding of security and secure design principles. Desirable qualifications: CSTP, CSTA, CAST, CRT
  • Knowledge of OWASP
  • Exposure to cloud technology and an in-depth understanding of the AWS/EC2 platform
