September 2016 Report on Jobs

Posted on October 07, 2016

This is a summary of the key points from the latest Report on Jobs for September which is compiled by Markit and sponsored by the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC).

  • Permanent placements and temp billings increase moderately
  • Solid growth of permanent salaries but temp pay at 40-month low
  • Slower decline in staff availability
  • Availability of temporary staff falls at slowest rate since January 2014

Latest data showed a second straight monthly rise in permanent staff placement volumes, after the declines seen in June and July. Temporary/contract staff billings also rose. In both cases, rates of growth remained slight overall. Average starting salaries for candidates placed in permanent jobs rose further in September. Temporary/contract staff pay however increased at the weakest rate in 40 months. The availability of staff to fill permanent roles continued to fall in September. Although remaining marked, the rate of decline eased to the slowest in almost three years. Recruitment consultants in the South of England reported a fall in the volume of candidates available for temporary employment for the thirty-seventh month running. That said, the rate of decline was the least marked in 32 months, and weaker than the UK average for the first time since December last year.
