Country sees largest rise in employment for 21 years​

Unemployment has fallen across the South West, although only marginally, reflecting the national trend.

The rate for the South West - those claiming unemployment benefit - now stands at 2.8, representing 78,100 people, down 1.2 per cent on the previous month and down from a high of 97,800 in January.

Nationally the figures describe the largest rise in employment for more than 21 years which helped drive the number of jobless down by 49,000 in the three months to June.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) said the UK unemployment level fell to 2.46 million after the biggest quarterly decrease for three years.
